HUS  has nationwide responsibility for the treatment and diagnostics of several demanding diseases.

Specialist medical care with centralized nationwide duties is defined in the Government Decree on the organization and centralization of specialist medical care.  

In 2021, we recorded the second highest annual number of organ transplantations in our history. We performed 420 organ transplantations, of which 24 on children. 

The Burn Center at Jorvi Hospital treated patients who came in with injuries for instance from open flames, sauna stoves and high-voltage electricity. 

Areas for which we have centralized nationwide responsibility include the following:

  • organ transplantations
  • treatment of severe burns
  • allogeneic bone marrow stem cell transplants
  • invasive diagnostics of epilepsy and surgical treatment
  • open-heart surgery for infants and
  • other demanding pediatric cardiac surgery
  • demanding invasive fetal testing and treatment
  • planning of treatment and surgical treatment of patients with cleft lip and palate​
