Goal 1: All HUS employees are aware of the environmental impacts of their jobs and how they can address those impacts
Action | Implementation
80 new environment managers to be trained in 2020 | Only partly attained, due to the coronavirus pandemic. 52 environment managers were trained. |
● |
25 environment managers to attend refresher training annually | Only partly attained, due to the coronavirus pandemic. 9 environment managers attended refresher training. |
● |
Targeted waste management training provided for various occupational groups | Partly attained. Two targeted waste management training sessions were held, with 16 participants from a single occupational group. |
● |
Environmental matters to be communicated to all HUS employees at least 10 times per year, e.g. (1) environmental report once a year, (2) environmental newsletter 4 times a year, (3) environmental quarter hour 3 times a year, (4) Husari, 3 articles and 6 tips. | Environmental matters communicated to all HUS employees 10 times in 2020 1. Yes 2. Published 2 environmental newsletters, the latter being a double issue. 3. one environmental quarter hour in 2020 4. Husari published 3 articles and 5 tips |
● |
Goal: 2. Improve environmental management practices
Action | Implementation
Create a climate road map for HUS | Goal not attained. Preparation began in summer 2020 and will be completed in 2021. |
● |
Update HUS environmental policy | Goal attained. The new HUS environmental policy was approved by the HUS Executive Board on December 14, 2020. |
● |
Prepare the next five-year environmental program 2021–2025 | Goal attained. The new HUS environmental program 2021–2024 was approved by the HUS Executive Board on December 14, 2020. |
● |
Consider the environmental responsibilities and environmental management processes of HUS in devising the JCI quality system | Goal attained, because we noticed that the JCI system does not require separate documentation of the responsibilities and process of environmental management. |
● |
Make HUS practices compliant with the chapter JCI/FMS-5 Hazardous Materials | Goal attained. Our ‘JCI hazardous waste and chemicals’ policy was designed to be compliant with the JCI system. |
● |
Environmental matters are featured in external communications four times a year | Goal attained. |
● |
Recording of environmental matters and presenting them in the HUS financial statements will be improved | Goal attained, because we discovered that our current practice of documentation was sufficient. |
● |
Needs for monitoring emissions in wastewater surveyed by the end of 2020 | Goal attained. Needs for monitoring emissions in wastewater have been surveyed. |
● |
Goal: 3. Prevent waste generation and invest in reuse and recycling
Action | Implementation
Reducing the quantity of mixed waste, e.g. (1) introducing hospital plastics collection at hospitals where the investigation showed there was space available, (2) enhancing hospital plastics collection at Meilahti, (3) improving and devising signage for waste containers and sorting stations. | Goal attained. In 2020, the total quantity of mixed waste decreased by 4.3%. 1–2) hospital plastics collection was introduced at Ohkola Hospital and expanded on the Meilahti Hospital campus, in the kitchen at Kellokoski and at Hyvinkää Hospital, 3) improvement of signage was begun. |
● |
Reduce volume of biowaste by 30% from 2015 to 2020 | Partly attained. In 2020, the volume of biowaste was 16% less than in 2015. This reduction was partly (35%) due to the new biowaste collection system brought on stream at the Meilahti catering center. Estimates show that if it had been operation for the entire year, the volume of biowaste at HUS would have been 20% less than in 2015. |
● |
Attain 10% savings on total costs of hazardous waste from 2015 to 2020 by improving the hazardous waste management process at Meilahti | Evaluation of attainment of this goal is still ongoing as at the time of publication of this Annual Report. A new pharmaceutical waste collection process was introduced at Meilahti in February 2020. An estimate of the cost savings will be completed in spring 2021.
HUSKEY monitoring system: (1) extend the system to monitoring quantities of plastic waste, (2) extend the system to cover units other than HUS units operating in HUS premises. | Goal attained. 1. Plastic waste monitoring in the HUSKEY system began in February 2020; 2. The HUSKEY system was extended to cover most of the units other than HUS units operating in HUS premises. |

Goal 4: Continue energy efficiency efforts with a new energy efficiency agreement among municipalities
Action | Implementation
The energy efficiency measures outlined in the investment program will achieve savings of 7.5% from the level of energy consumption in 2015 by the end of 2025. The accumulated savings target for 2020 is 2,601 MWh. Prognosis and outcome monitoring for savings measures is to be introduced. | Partly attained. In 2020, accumulated savings of about 1,900 MWh was attained. The accumulated savings from 2017 to 2020, about 11,300 MWh, when averaged out, exceeds the annual savings goal of 2,601 MWh by about 8% and also exceeds the interim goal of 10,404 MWh overall for 2020 set in the energy efficiency agreement. Monitoring of savings measures and their prognoses was introduced in 2020. |
● |
Practices designed in the project ‘Cost cutting management and reporting’ deployed. | Partly attained, because not all practices were deployed. A monitoring model for savings measures and their prognoses was introduced in 2020, and a computation round was carried out during autumn 2020. Further computation rounds will be carried out in 2021. A practice for collecting data on construction and renovation projects and on repair and alteration projects will be implemented later. |
● |
Goal 6: Consider the life cycle environmental impacts of properties.
Action | Implementation
Revise parking fees so as to encourage people to use private cars less | Goal not attained yet. Investigation is ongoing. We are planning to introduce invoicing on an actual-use basis instead of a monthly fee. |
● |
Promote environmentally friendly options in the mobility of HUS personnel and patients | Goal attained. We published an Intranet website on commuting and introduced measures in accordance with the program for promoting responsible and sustainable mobility at Meilahti. We devised a bicycle parking plan for Meilahti. |
● |
Prepare a roadmap for reducing emissions of volatile anesthetics | Partly attained. We have begun an investigation on possibilities to change the recovery and usage of volatile anesthetics. |
