In clinical pharmacology, we provide expert and consultant services to other healthcare professionals on all questions related to the use of medicines. Our expertise is often needed in complex issues of adverse effects and interactions, for instance. We also provide expertise in clinical drug trials, drug and medication safety, pharmacogenetics and determinations of drug levels.

In the field of clinical physiology and nuclear medicine, we specialize in the study of disorders of human organ systems. In clinical physiology, we focus particularly on examining the lungs, heart, circulatory system, autonomic nervous system, bones and esophagus, using procedures such as short-term and long-term measurements, ultrasound and MRI, and provocation tests.

In nuclear medicine, we perform advanced imaging examinations that specifically enable imaging of the brain, heart and whole body metabolism, and also receptor imaging. These examinations are used to diagnose oncology, inflammatory conditions, neurodegenerative diseases and other degenerative conditions, and to assess response to treatment.

We also employ traditional nuclear imaging techniques for imaging bones, lungs, kidneys, brain, thyroid and lymph ducts.

We work closely with other branches of medicine to facilitate a comprehensive approach to understanding a patient’s disorders and treatment.

The Department of Clinical Physiology and Nuclear Medicine provides physicians with the opportunity to work in a diverse and technologically advanced environment where they can improve their expertise and participate in patient care in innovative and effective ways.

Clinical chemistry studies the functions of and disruptions in the body by examining bodily fluids such as blood, urine and cerebrospinal fluid. Specialists here are responsible, in consultation with other professionals in the field, for the performing, quality and interpretation of laboratory tests.

The clinical chemistry laboratory operations of the Diagnostic Center cover the HUS area, South Karelia and Kymenlaakso. You will be based on the Meilahti hospital campus in Helsinki. Here you will be able to work flexible working hours in comfortable facilities. Most of your job duties can be partly performed remotely.

As a clinical chemistry physician, you will work in multiprofessional teams and participate in innovative projects. You will also be involved in improving our processes to better serve our customers and personnel.

In clinical microbiology, we perform diverse and wide-ranging laboratory diagnostics in these disciplines:

Clinical microbiology studies play a key role in the diagnostics and monitoring of infectious and autoimmune diseases and in the investigation and prevention of epidemics.

The clinical microbiology laboratory provides an excellent environment for physicians interested in the diagnostics of infectious and immune diseases. You will be able to gain a deeper understanding of pathogens and their controls and explore the mechanisms of autoimmune and immunodeficiency diseases.

Clinical neurophysiology is a specialist field focusing on the electrical activity of the central and peripheral nervous system and of the muscles. The most typical examinations performed are electroencephalography (EEG) mapping electrical activity in the brain, electroneuromyography (ENMG) examining the functioning of nerves and muscles, and sleep disorder examinations.

As a specialist in clinical neurophysiology, you will be working both with specialists in other specialties and in close multiprofessional cooperation with nurses, physicists and laboratory engineers.

Outside your department, you will contribute to multiprofessional teams. You may, for instance, discuss long-term EEG monitoring in an ICU, perform neurophysiological monitoring in an operating room or provide expert assistance on teams treating patients with muscular disorders.

Clinical neurophysiology offers a dynamic and challenging career path for physicians, combining technological expertise, troubleshooting and continuous learning. This specialty also offers excellent potential for research and methodological development. Clinical neurophysiology is a rapidly evolving field, with new clinical applications emerging from advancements in medical technology and neurological imaging.

Our pathology laboratory plays a central role in diagnosing diseases and planning treatment. We analyze cell and tissue samples and conduct hospital autopsies.

Our division includes the pathology laboratories in Meilahti, Hyvinkää, Jorvi, Kymenlaakso, and South Karelia. The Pathology Laboratory at Meilahti also houses the Transplantation and Hematopathology Laboratory, which focuses specifically on studying transplantations and hematological disorders.

We conduct approximately 430,000 tests every year. Working closely with various clinical specialties is an essential part of what we do.

Pathology is a specialty that offers physicians an in-depth look at the molecular and microscopic world of diseases. Pathology is an excellent field for physicians interested in exact diagnostic work and the evolution of diseases.

In Clinical Genetics, we focus on the diagnostics of genetic diseases, the study of the inheritance of the disease in the family and advisory services. Genetic testing methods, which are constantly evolving in medical genetics, provide an increasingly accurate understanding of the inheritance and mechanisms of many diseases. We use both traditional and state-of-the-art molecular genetics technologies.

We treat patients who are suspected of having a hereditary disease, investigate how diseases are inherited in families and provide advisory services. Approximately 5,000 patients each year visit our outpatient clinic at the Skin and Allergy Hospital.

Our genetics laboratory is the largest in Finland, and we conduct approximately 50,000 genome studies every year.

Our radiology unit provides a wide range of imaging services in the HUS area. Imaging plays a central role in the diagnosis and follow-up of many diseases.

As a radiology specialist, you will be interpreting and issuing statements on various imaging examinations. In addition to interpreting traditional X-ray images, you will also be working on instructions for and statements on CT and MRI examinations. You will perform ultrasound and fluoroscopy examinations and various procedures. These procedures consist mainly of tissue and cell collection and channeling.

As an imaging expert, you will be helping clinicians select imaging studies and will be a member on multiprofessional teams addressing a variety of things such as cancer care.

Radiology provides an excellent career path for physicians who want to work with technology and develop their skills in diagnostics. We offer physicians interested in radiology the opportunity to work with a wide variety of imaging methods.
