HUS year 2023: Education and training
The roadmap for education at HUS was completed. Its goal is now to provide students with a smoother path to HUS and to ensure appreciative and equal treatment of students.
In 2023, we had students and specializing physicians as follows:
- 1797 undergraduates in the Faculty of Medicine
- 974 specializing physicians
- 45 specializing dentists
- 4 917 students from universities of applied sciences and 489 post-secondary level students
We made significant progress in our teaching. We completed the investigation and detailed roadmap for education and further enhanced our cooperation with the University of Helsinki.
We then launched three strategic projects based on the roadmap. The purpose of these is to smooth the transition for newly graduated physicians and medical students to apply for and be hired at HUS, to establish the practice of respectful and equal treatment of students and trainees throughout HUS, and to foster commitment of newly graduated physicians to the organization.
Instructor physician scheme boosted
We organized third-party pedagogical training for medical instructors. During the year, the volume of instructor physician and instructor dentist activities continued to grow in network meetings and seminars. Representatives from the network of senior specializing physicians attended the Young Doctor seminar as specialization ambassadors.
Feedback-driven teaching development continues
The number of student feedback submissions and the average rating increased. In 2023, the average rating given in feedback by physicians and specializing physicians was above 8 (on a scale of 0 to 10).
At the end of the year, we introduced a nonstop feedback channel for students where anonymous feedback can be posted at any time. The nonstop feedback helps us improve teaching structures so as to support the learning and wellbeing of students and specializing physicians.
The multi-discipline student panel was established as a permanent feature at the start of 2023. The panel met 4 times during the year. The university degree programs represented on the panel are medicine (in Finnish and Swedish), dentistry, logopedics, and psychology.
Involved in events and networking
We held a Christmas workshop for our medical and dentistry students on the theme of good engagement with students at HUS.
We participated in the Finnish Medical Convention and the Young Doctor seminar with the aim of recruiting new specializing physicians.
We also promoted good teaching in the following ways:
- BMs and BDSs were issued staff passes to the Meilahti hospitals, making it easier for students to move around.
- We engaged in closer cooperation in many areas in the fields of logopedics, psychology, translational medicine, and pharmacy.
- HUS signed a training agreement with the University of Tampere for the training included in the process of legalizing professionals who completed their training in another EU/EEA Member State.
- We also started collaboration with the Finnish Medical Association.
