Internal Medicine and Rehabilitation
We examine and treat patients with visceral or metabolic diseases. Internal Medicine and Rehabilitation is one of the 13 departments in the Helsinki University Hospital Area.
In addition, we care for elderly people who need expertise in several specialties. We are responsible for a significant portion of rehabilitation personnel and demanding rehabilitation services, as well as for the activities of the HUS Assistive Equipment Center. In addition, healthcare social workers and clinical dietitians from the Special Services division participate in the care of patients in the Helsinki metropolitan area.
We provide extensive consultation support to other specialties, and also the care of some rare diseases has been nationally centralized in our department.
An important part of our activities is the planning and coordination of the university study period of physicians specializing in internal medicine, geriatrics and physiatry, and the clinical instruction of medical students in cooperation with the University of Helsinki. We are responsible for the clinical research in our specialties.
A customer panel of experts by experience is involved in the planning of the internal medicine and rehabilitation activities.
Divisions
The specialty of internal medicine covers the examination, diagnostics and treatment of diseases of the visceral organs as well as metabolic disorders.
The treatment of internal medicine disorders are divided into examination, diagnostics and treatment of endocrinological, gastroenterological, hematological, cardiological, nephrological and rheumatological diseases, as well as infectious diseases. In the past, specialties were concise specialties within internal medicine, but nowadays they have been differentiated as their own specialties.
Rehabilitation is a systematic and goal-oriented process. In rehabilitation, the rehabilitee plays an essential and active role in promoting their functional capacity and work ability with the support of professionals and their home and work environment. A rehabilitee can be anyone who needs to promote their functional capacity in order to cope with their everyday activities to their own satisfaction. Rehabilitation can take the form of rehabilitation services or guidance, the starting point being the rehabilitee's personal needs and goals.
The Rehabilitation division provides patients with the following services: physiatry, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, treatment of spinal cord injuries, and treatment of functional disorders.
Special Services division includes social work and nutritional care.
As a patient in HUS, you can have a discussion with a healthcare social worker on how the illness affects your situation in life and, if necessary, you can also learn more about matters associated with social security, services, or rehabilitation.
In nutritional care, our clinical dietitians treat patients who need nutritional and dietary guidance related to their illness or its treatment. Nutritional care and therapy promotes recovery, improves quality of life, and maintains a good nutritional status. Nutritional care also includes the nutritional guidance related to the promotion of health and prevention of illnesses.
Geriatrics is a specialty in medicine that focuses on the holistic treatment of elderly people, taking into account their physical, mental, and social situation.
HUS has a Geriatrics Consultation Unit that collaborates with other specialties. The aim of the activities is to ensure good and individual care, quality of life, and functional capacity of elderly patients.
