Heart and Lung Center
We offer specialist medical care in the fields of cardiology, cardiac surgery, pulmonary diseases, and general thoracic and esophageal surgery.
We are responsible for the emergency services for heart diseases around the clock. In thoracic diseases, the Heart and Lung Center has Finland's only specialist-level emergency clinic for pulmonary diseases and emergency-care preparedness for thoracic diseases.
We have national responsibility for heart and lung transplants. We are also the centralized unit responsible for the treatment of rare and demanding congenital diseases of the thoracic cavity and the heart.
The Heart and Lung Center is the largest center in Finland and is a major center even on a European scale. The center plays a pioneering role in robot-assisted and video-assisted surgery.
Divisions
In the Cardiology division, we examine and treat the most severe congenital heart defects and other rare heart diseases in adult patients nationally.
In the Cardiac Surgery division, we examine and treat heart diseases. Diagnostic examinations and surgical procedures for cardiac surgery in adult patients have been centralized in the Heart and Lung Center at Meilahti Tower Hospital.
In the Pulmonary Disease division, we are responsible for the activities of the specialty of pulmonary diseases in the hospitals of Meilahti, Jorvi, and Peijas, the Skin and Allergy Hospital (Sleep Research Outpatient Clinic), and the Rekola Group Home, and home care for respiratory paralysis patients.
The General Thoracic Surgery Division is a leading national center and developer of the field in Finland. We treat patients with benign or malignant diseases in the lungs, esophagus or trachea, mediastinum or chest wall that can be treated surgically or endoscopically.
Nursing at the Heart and Lung Center
Our goal is that every patient cared for in our unit receives excellent care. Our nursing work is governed by the professional practice model of nursing and HUS strategy and values: Caring, Equality and Pioneership.
In excellent nursing, the satisfaction of our patients, the job satisfaction of our nurses, and the quality of our nursing care are at the center. We measure all these aspects and compare the outcomes with national and international results.
Our nurses are professional and genuinely caring. Our nursing is comprehensive and based on multiprofessional cooperation.
We want our patients to receive the best possible care every day. The patient feedback we have received emphasize the genuine caring, professionalism and competence of nurses. We collect patient feedback on our nursing care, and we go through all the feedback to process it. The feedback we receive on nursing is valuable so that we can develop our operations.
Our skilled nursing staff who thrive in their work enable the high-quality patient care we provide. We monitor the job satisfaction and commitment to work of our nurses on a regular basis. We utilize the results to develop factors that support the wellbeing of our nursing staff. According to the results, the nurses at the Heart and Lung Center are more satisfied with their work than the national average.
We strive for safe nursing of the highest quality. Thanks to the continuous development of nursing, we have been able to, among other things, minimize pressure injuries and catheter and cannula-derived infections occurring during care. To prevent falls, we have done a lot of development work, for example, with the help of smart technology.
