Children and Adolescents
We are responsible for pediatrics, pediatric surgery, pediatric neurology, and child psychiatry activities in the Uusimaa region. We treat difficult patient cases from all over Finland. Children and Adolescents is one of the 13 departments in the Helsinki University Hospital Area.
We provide effective care for the best interest of the patient and provide a competitive working environment for the personnel, researchers, and students. Our goal is to expand specialist medical care services for children and adolescents both nationally and internationally.
A family panel comprising of the children's parents as well as experts by experience bring the families' perspective to the development and operating methods of the hospital.
The department includes six divisions: Tertiary Pediatrics, General Pediatrics, Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric Neurology, Child Psychiatry, and Digital and Innovation Services. In addition, the department includes the Rare Diseases Center. In addition to the New Children's Hospital, we treat patients in other hospitals and clinics in the Uusimaa region.
In HUS, we also develop care through technological solutions as well as digital services and innovations. Digital services, such as Lastentalo.fi, complement traditional healthcare services and facilitate timely access to information. The New Children's Hospital uses real-time positioning technology and a system for providing guidance for use of services and managing the use of the facilities.
Divisions
The Tertiary Pediatrics division is responsible for the treatment of children's cardiac diseases, hematological and oncological diseases, renal diseases and transplant patients, as well as newborns in need of inpatient care at the hospital. We treat children with gastrointestinal or rheumatic disorders, or who have skeletal growth and metabolic problems, as well as other rare diseases. The treatment of cardiac diseases and organ transplantations in children are nationally centralized in HUS.
The Pediatric Surgery division is responsible for surgeries and procedures for patients under the age of 16 in all the specialties. We are responsible for almost all special-level pediatric surgery in HUS and all pediatric surgery in the Helsinki University Hospital Area. Nationwide, we are responsible for cardiac surgery and transplant surgery for young children, and rare and severe cases of pediatric surgery.
Surgeries and other procedures requiring general anesthesia will be performed at the New Children's Hospital.
We treat, investigate and rehabilitate children and young people under the age of 16 with neurological disease, disability, or suspicion of one. We treat patients from all over Finland.
We treat severe epilepsy in children, several rare neurometabolic and immunological diseases in children, rehabilitation of mobility-impaired children, and neuro-orthopedic patients nationwide. In addition, we conduct neurological examinations on pediatric patients with cancer, heart disease or immunological diseases or who have undergone organ transplantation.
In HUS, pediatric neurology patients are treated in the pediatric outpatient clinics, day centers, and inpatient wards.
We treat child psychiatry patients under the age of 13 from the entire Uusimaa region. We treat and examine most of the children in outpatient care at child psychiatry outpatient clinics. We also provide intensive outpatient care and child psychiatric inpatient care on the day, week and acute wards.
In HUS, we examine and treat all pediatric illnesses. Pediatric illnesses include, for example, the treatment of infectious diseases, intestinal and rheumatic infections, and neonatal diseases.
